History & Accomplishments
- In 1990, the CAEF was launched with a $100,000 challenge donation from
Alex Campbell, CA and its first Board of Governors worked tirelessly to raise
the matching funds.
- Subsequent CAEF Boards have contributed to the Foundation's growth by heightening
the CAEF profile with members, CA firms and accounting educators and by encouraging
donations of all varieties and at all levels.
- In 1993, Herbert W. Edwardson, CA, bequeathed his entire estate to the
Foundation, making the largest single contribution from an individual.
- Memorial funds were established for many prominent CAs, among them Geoffrey
W.J. Carter, CA, Jim Miller, CA, John Hadfield, CA, Desmond O'Brien, CA, and William Rowe, CA.
- In 1996, the CA Professorship in Accounting
at the University of B.C. was established by the CAEF. The post is currently
held by Dr. Kin Lo, CA.
- In 1999, the Foundation provided the seed money to launch the CA School
of Business.
- In 2000, Simon Fraser University designated Dr. Craig Emby, CA and Dr Alex Gelardi, CA as CA Research Fellows, postings
that are annually renewable. In 2008, Dr. Craig Emby, CA and Dr. Dennis Chung, CA are currently the CA Research Fellows at SFU.
- In the spring of 2003, the CAEF sponsored the first Accounting
Educators' Symposium in B.C., featuring American accounting scholar Peter
Wilson. Since that first event, the Symopsium has been held every two years, in 2005 and 2007. The 2007 symposium hosted approximately 50 CA educators from across BC, touching on everything from ethics in teaching to what’s happening in Canadian GAAP.
- In 2006, the CAEF established a Doctoral Support Program, making forgivable loans available to CAs pursuing doctoral studies. To date, four CAs have been supported in their pursuit of doctoral studies.
- In 2008, the CAEF sponsored a conference for academics and educators on “Understanding International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)” held in Vancouver, Kelowna and Victoria and attended by over 100 BC educators.
- In 2008, the CAEF funded the development and initial offering of a course called “Not for Profit Governance – What’s New”, providing CAs with an update on best practices in not-for-profit governance for charitable organizations.
